Hello guys,

First and foremost thanks so much for helping me. This question pertains to anyone who is a counselor especially in addiction counseling. I just want to know if I am eligible to be a drug and alcohol counselor, because it is something I have dreamed of doing for many years. I struggled with drug addiction for years, but am now happy to say I have kicked it and live an overall very clean life. I am a couple years clean off meth - I have an associate's degree but I understand there is a one year long certificate to get certification to become a substance abuse counselor. There are just a few questions I have before I start pursuing this...

1.) I don't have any felonies but I have a 4 year old case where I was arrested and did some time for meth possession, etc. I have been off probation for over 4 years. Will this disqualify me in the application process? I understand a lot of people have been in my shoes and have the same experiences and also want to be counselors - I would think that some of the good ones actually do have those ugly experiences under their belt, and I would be surprised if this disqualified me from employment - since the job is really about fixing past failures.

2.) As far as drug use goes, I don't do any drugs anymore, I drink maybe a few beers a week and I do smoke cannabis (Don't smoke cigarettes) which I am not sure if it would be a problem or not. For example, if the laws are cannabis-friendly would I still be able to smoke (Obviously when not working if that even has to be said) or would this disqualify me in the process? I would never go back to that ugly life again and I have overcome those pathways - but weed simply helps me in life and isn't really harmful, and I don't think a few beers a week is hurting anyone either.

If anyone can advise whether I would still have a chance of gaining employment in this industry, I would really really appreciate it! Thanks so much

You need to present this information to your prospective employer. The employer is the one who determines what qualifications a person needs to have to be eligible for a job. Most drug and alcohol counselors have a history of drug and alcohol abuse. Kiss

You can say anything about me, but I am who I am & that’s something you could never be.
My name is what hoes tend to mention, keep talking bitches, I love the attention. →
