Hey everyone,

I am just wondering what you guys think is the best path to recovery for me.

I am 18 years old and an entering my sophomore year of college.

I believe I am a codependent. I routinely try to control and manipulate people and sometimes obsess over their lives. It has destroyed many relationships and has also prevented me from having many relationships.

I have read Codependent No More by Melody Beattie and I thought it was a wonderful book.

I also believe that my codependency makes me avoid people and gives me great anxiety. I do not believe I have full blown social anxiety, or even a mild case, I just have some of the symptoms. I also am a compulsive worrier and a checker. I am always worried about doing things perfectly (OCD)

But I am a codependent mostly.

My question to you guys is, what path to recovery should I take?

If i start seeing a therapist now, I start school in a little over 1 month. The school does have mental health services, but I dont know if I am ready for that.

Has anyone actually recovered on their own?

Any words of wisdom for me?

Thanks in advance

I think it is very difficult to do this on your own especially when you don't have to. Why be alone with it?
You need support, encouragement and validation during your recovery which you can get from coda meetings. Therapy has been invalueable to me in my recovery. Why not get all the help you can? Without the help of other people your subconscious may not allow things to come to the surface that need to inorder to heal and learn new behaviors.

love,
kathy

I am trying to recover on my own right now and I don't find it is working. I am going to start seeing my therapist again and also return to meetings.

Kathy is right, we need support, not isolation. Check out some meetings, I always feel better after I go. And a therapist can help with internal core issues. That has been my experience.

Hi Daze,

I did my recovery/healing process on my own several years ago. All I did is help of book about emotional pain and healing. I did not mean to do it alone, it just that I relocated to new area, had phobia from people due to the abuses I had endured in my life from so many people.

During that time, I was in contact with a few social workers which helped give me some confidence and validation about my recovery process.

So, I believe each case is different and unique. We cannot generalize.
I wish I were not abused by many people, that would have made me more outgoing then. However, now I am very healthy and love people and even help people both online and in my personal everyday life, even if I remain cautious.

~Love, best of luck! RAS~
