Does anyone know anything about this disorder? My sister who is only 24 has a possible diagnosis. She was working and they thought she was having a stroke. Now they think it is Bells Palsy. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Bells Palsy is unilateral facial paralysis of sudden onset and unknown cause. The mechanism is presumed to involve sweeling of the nerve due to immune or viral disease, with ischemia & compression of the facial nerve in the narrow confines of its course through the temporal bone.

The weakness of the entire half of the face distinguishes Bell's palsy from supranuclear lesions (ie. stoke, cerebral tumor), in which the weakness is partial and involves the frontalis and orbicularis oculi less than those muscles in the lower part of the face below the eye.

Thanks Destinystar. I have been online all day looking up information about the disorder. It is scary b/c somtimes you can get it more than once and your face doesn't always make a full recover, although I think it is most common to have a full recovery.

Usually people do recover.

I had bells palsy about 10 years ago i went to the doc immeadeatly thought i was having a stroke too
The doc prescibed a round of deltasone??? and started this steroid right away. it still took me 2 1/2 weeks for complete recovery. I have seen some who are less fortunate though with some residule. it's important to get medical atten. I think it really helped.

My Pastor in his mid 40s had this. He experienced a lot of facial pain and sought acupunture. He found this to be a huge relief. His condition lasted about 6 months. Wendy

I had it six years ago. It was a really strange experience. I understand it can be stress related. I was under an immense amount of stress at the time.
It has finally run its course in my case. The inability to blink my left eye was the worst part though, which can lead to further complications. It takes time to regain feeling and use of that area of the face. There is not much one can do but accept it.
