I just started Zoloft on Thursday. I had taken it last year, without much success. I'm taking it for persistent (bordering on obsessive) thoughts and depression.

I was wondering what others' experience with Zoloft was, specifically, how long did it take to start working, and how dod you know it was working? Thanks.

Jack

Hi Jack,

In my experience taking Zoloft, which I took for anxiety, it probably took a good two weeks or so before I began to feel a bit better. The results for me was that it lessened my anxiety which enabled me to be able to eat, sleep and concentrate better. It also helped me with the "obsessive thinking" that was a major cause of my anxiety.

I would also like to add that I only took it for six months, and I stopped taking it on my own (which is not recommended). I stopped taking it after I ended the horrible relationship I had been in....so I'm not so sure if it was the Zoloft....or the fact that I threw the jerk out!! LOL 🙂

Anwway, good luck to you, I hope this helped.

jack, it took me 3 weeks just for it to start having a possitive effect (my adjustment incloded a lot of physical anxiety and sleep trouble, shadows like you mentioned before...but that is how I adjust to most new meds). WHen it did start to really become effective, it was actually quite sudden, like over the course of a few days I noticed a drastic lift in my depression, suicidal thoughts, anger, paranoia (I had postpadum depression which includes these symtoms, and I was living with an abuser). I think that the combination of making some changes in my life and the chemical aid of the medication is what really worked best for me, I still can't tell if it was the meds that helped me make the changes or the changes that let the sun in long enough for the meds to work (though the great people here had so much to do with a lot of it! Thank you all that remember this darker time for me!).

How long have you been taking it? What is your dose?

Oh, I just saw you have been taking it since Thursday. maybe ou can ask your therapist if there is something you can take for temporary relief until it works better? I took something for my anxiety which went hand in hand with my compulsive thinking, it was something I just took when I was going through an attack, it was very mild and helpful--and as the medication started working, I stopped needing to use it at all.

I had to start taking mine in the morning because of all of the restlessness and sleep issues. Once it started working which was about two weeks for me it completely felt like a fog had lifted. I felt normal in the head, before even earthworms on rainy days would bring great and anxiety and to the point of tears. Good Luck! DandyLion
