I have always had a big problem with depression and anger. I have been to therapy a number of times (a number of different therapists), but it hasn't been particularly useful. I have tried a number of different meds, and prefer Prozac, which I have been taking with much success for at least a year. Prozac keeps me on a more positive and rational level, but kills the sex drive and sometimes makes me feel cut off from my emotions altogether.

The one emotion I do have is anger. I have always been an angry person. The Prozac has helped to repress outbursts a good bit, but when the anger finally surfaces, it scares me. I have not been violent in the past couple of years, but it takes every bit of restraint I have to keep my feelings from manifesting into physical aggression these days.

My anger has ruined many relationships and adversely affected me for years. I wish I knew what to do about it. The meds don't seem to help it, the counseling doesn't seem to make much difference, either. I am reluctant to try new drugs, as I have found that any changes in that area cause me much grief during the interim between taking one med and starting another. I am actually afraid to stop taking Prozac. The last time I switched meds, I became so irrational that I nearly lost my job.

I am a well-educated person. I have a master's degree and have searched extensively in the realms of psychology and spirituality for something that will make me "normal." I feel that my anger is something very ugly that I struggle to keep people from knowing about me. I don't know what to do. I am very scared.

Hi girl72,

I can't offer much advice, but I seem to remember reading some studies a while back that actually linked Prozac to violence in some people. Do you think that could be you by any chance? You really should talk to your psychiatrist who is subscribing the medications. When you switch from one to another, it should be done so gradually that your body has time to adjust to the new levels...ideally this should take weeks or even a couple months, depending on the medication. Most anti-depressants and similar meds have a long half-life once they have built up in the body, and you can't just cut off the supply without some unsettling affects.

Do you see a therapist or counselor? They seem to be more helpful with unresolved issues than psychiatrists. It almost sounds like you have something in your past that makes you so angry. Maybe if you talk about your anger, you can help solve it. Also, have you ever had blood tests and tests of hormone levels? I wonder if some sort of imbalance could be making you angry. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck with your search.

I agreed - you might want to have your blood test taken to see if there's any hormone imbalance, blood sugar, or something.

I became so ANGRY all the time for no particular reasons until I found out that I have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). You just never know what's in your blood and hormone situation until future test. Good luck and I hope you find anything. God Bless, GiGi
