My bf has been divorced for 16 years and including his marriage has never had a healthy relationship.
He has been sober for 2 1/2 years and goes to AA.
I have never had a healthy relationship either-but let's not get into that because I love this guy and am going to work through anything with him (except if he drinks again - because I can tell he was horrible when he was drinking).
Here's my question: I have been thinking about going to Al-anon - but want to know if any of you have been there? I want to know what to expect. I want to make sure I am going to get something out of it.
I know problems we have are NOT only him - I am certainly not perfect. AND we do have a very open communication and talk all the time about our relationship, our feelings - everything. And I know talking like we do is a first for both of us and it's harder for me than it is for him.

Your boyfriend is doing well and congratualtions to him for going 2 1/2 years without a drink! I highly recommend Al-Anon meetings for you.
I have found strength in attending these meetings. I didn't realize how I had become a co-dependent to my husband's problems and I became as sick as he was. Go and visit a meeting. You need to stay healthy too! You are lucky that the 2 of you have open communication. Good luck to you both...

Lets try this again, I wrote this once and accidentally deleted it!!
I have been going to alanon for about 3 years and it has helped me soooo much. I say give them a try. Give them several tries because you will meet different people at each one. My group went through a phase where they tended to get sidetracked and spend too much time talking about silly stuff but they got back on track. I have just started coda meetings and I am interested to see how they are different from alanon.

Alanon really does help. I was pretty scared going to that first meeting, but everyone was so nice. You can choose to talk or not talk, you can just listen. What is nice about alanon is that it's for the loved ones of the addict. A place just for us, to go and focus on how to make our lives better.
Good luck pink.

I have been to Al Anon and it does help, it keep the focus on you.

As your bf goes to AA, that is for him, and Al anon is for you.

Its great that he has 2 1/2 yrs sobriety.

give al anon a shot, I think you will like it.
