I am a recovering ten-year addict, I have been sober for over a year now. I want to become a substance abuse counselor so that I can make a career helping those who are in the same situation that I was in for so long. I have tried to do research on how to get a career in this area started, but everything I find seems to be very vague. Do I need to get a degree, or can I just start the certification process? I am really at a loss.

Substance abuse refers to the habitual use of a mind altering substance, whether it’s alcohol or drugs. Although most substance abusers may find that they are seemingly blessed with a number of positive side effects of these substances, the reality is that these substances are ultimately very harmful. For instance, these substances not only harm a person’s body, but they can also fracture their soul.
