Well, it varies from state to state, the requirements that you have to fulfill. I would advise that you ask your guidance counselor if you're still in school, or call a rehabilitation center in your area. That will give you an idea as to what you need.

That's true. Generally, however, you need a bachelor's degree in psychology or social work, plus a certificate in addictions counseling. You will be required to finish an internship, pass a licensing exam and be drug and alcohol free yourself.

A master's degree would help too.

Do you need to be licensed nationally? Or will state licensure do? I've heard that you have to be certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors to practice?

Well not all states require you to be nationally licensed... but you are required to be licensed at least on a state level.

Attitude wise though, you would need to be distant. Your client's problems are theirs and while you are there to help them overcome their addictions, it does not do you or them any good if you get too involved with their problems. You should not invest too much, emotionally.

More than that, you should be a very effective communicator, with good problem solving skills.  You must also love working with people and be empathetic!

I do think that there is a very positive outlook for a career in addiction counseling.  There are so many people who are alcoholics and drug addicts, that you'd never run out of clients!
