Self-help is a type of psychological therapy that relies on individuals seeking information and research for personal growth without professional help. There is a huge emphasis on self-improvement within this method, as the process is focused entirely on yourself. This type of therapy contributes heavily towards building inner strength and confidence as it forces you to rely on your own devices to solve your problems. Outside of the obvious benefits of personal growth, self-help is also considered to be the most economical of all types of therapy.

While not all inner struggles can be completely solved at such a personal level, many have found that treating themselves can be a beneficial and positive experience. The self-help process is usually initiated by asking yourself personal questions. You need to find out what about yourself you would like to change, why you would like to change it and why you have never felt the need to make the change before. These three basic questions will likely be all you need to start your quest for self-help off in the appropriate direction.

If you are seeking with a group to help resolve an issue or better yourself, there are several key points to look for. Groups should be open and welcoming to new members and should not show any hostility or judgement among each other. Meetings should have a clear focus and follow an organizational pattern to avoid unfocused therapy. Participation should also be expected from everyone in the group, as well as a general openness and trusting attitude towards other members.

Sometimes the best thing for your own personal psyche is a good dosing of self-help. Self-help can be found in everything from a book, a website or your own mental determination to change and grow. The process of self-help can create a new respect for yourself and can constantly create a boost of self esteem. While not always the case, most individuals decide to handle the process of recovery on their own if utilizing self-help. The process will help you explore your own psyche and provides ample opportunities for personal growth and the development of inner strength. The change you make in yourself through self-help can range anywhere from taking yourself out of a comfort zone to take part in a new experience, to forcing yourself to live a healthier lifestyle in order to make a conscious personal change. There is no proven “right” or “wrong” way to undergo self-help, but do remember that if you are having trouble making the change on your own, seeking proper counseling or therapy may be the best option.

Self-help does not necessarily mean you work strictly on your own to overcome personal issues. Group therapy is a very popular form of self-help and relies on people with similar problems or issues working together as a support system to the benefit of each individual in the group. These groups can range in size from two people to 2,000 people, and can meet at any determined time or can count on each other to help themselves with their shared problem. Some groups do not even have to meet face-to-face and instead can use technology to their advantage and meet online or through an Internet forum.

Self-Help is not by any means a new or revolutionary idea, but it has been experiencing a recent steady growth in popularity. Whether students of the practice are able to confront their issues on their own, in a group setting with like-minded individuals or through the aid of a 12-step program, self-help is a method that has been proven to work in the treatment of many peoples personal issues.
