School counselors can work in elementary, middle and high schools to provide academic, career, college access and personal/social competencies to every student. They design, implement, evaluate and enhance a comprehensive school-counseling program that promotes and enhances student success. In addition to working in schools, school counselors can also work in district supervisory positions and counselor education positions.

There are many qualities that a respectable school counselor should posses, one of the most important being the ability to listen. Empathy is also notable quality any trustworthy and reliable school counselor should possess because it leads to better listening and a better ability to help students come up with solutions. In order to become a professional school counselor, one must acquire a Masters degree in school counseling, meet the state’s certification/licensure standards and abide by the laws of the state in which they are employed. Once a school counselor is certified, they are qualified to address the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students.
