Difference Between Psychiatry and Psychology

Psychiatry and psychology are similar but they do have some differences, the main difference being that psychiatrists can legally prescribe medication whereas psychologists cannot. A psychiatrist will counsel a patient, determine a diagnosis, and then prescribe a specific medication. In addition, a psychiatrist may perform physical exams, order diagnostic tests and perform psychotherapy in order to further determine a patient’s psychosis. There are many different kinds of psychiatrists that can specialize in different things, such as an addiction psychiatrist, adult psychiatrist, child psychiatrist, forensic psychiatrist, etc.

Finding a good psychiatrist is very important, but not always easy. Most reviews of psychiatrists are written by patients, many of which share similar viewpoints when it comes to the qualities of a good psychiatrist. These reviews said that a good psychiatrist always listens and never judges. A psychiatrist must be an attentive listener in order to fully understand what mental illness their patient is dealing with. Also, a good psychiatrist never judges and always makes the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Also, a good psychiatrist should never tell a patient what to do. Instead, they should provide them with information, make suggestions and talk about the different variety of options. Finally, one of the most important qualities of a good psychiatrist is trust. A patient must feel like they can trust their psychiatrist in order for the therapy and treatment to be effective. If a patient can’t trust their psychiatrist, then they might not feel comfortable discussing all of their thoughts, feelings or fears.

Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medicine, which requires an M.D. Every licensed psychiatrist has a degree in medicine and has also undergone special training in the treatment of mental disorders. After completing medical training and the required level of schooling, a psychiatrist has to complete an additional four years of residency training in mental health in order to become certified.

Psychiatrists are usually self-employed and run their own practice, or they often work at hospitals, mental health clinics, government offices and universities. With more and more people becoming aware of mental disorders and with the subject becoming less taboo in society, psychiatrists are in high demand. Suffering from a mental disorder can be a life altering issue, which is why psychiatrists are so important. To learn more about psychiatry and psychiatrists check out these links.
