What Makes a Good Men's Counselor?
When it comes to finding the right counselor, there are a number of factors that can be used to find a counselor that will be a good fit.
First, as with any counselor you might be researching, it is important to look at their credentials. The gender of your counselor should also be taken into consideration when you are researching. While many Men’s Counselors are generally male, there are also female Men’s Counselors as well. While of course neither sex is better than the other, being completely comfortable with your counselor is very important. If you feel that you are going to be more comfortable with one gendered counselor over another, it is important to choose a counselor of the gender that you feel most at ease with.
Finally, always trust your instinct. If you do not feel comfortable with your counselor it is less likely that you will find help in seeking Men’s Counseling.
What is Men’s Counseling?
Though no two men are alike, many men do often suffer from certain issues more common to the gender, often substance abuse, anger management issues, impulse control problems, problems with intimacy and sexual problem. Men’s Counseling is a specialization that attempts to best serve its patients by addressing these unique issues.
Counselors use a number of different techniques to help men work through the issues that have made them seek counseling. Most popularly, counselors use the Cognitive Method with their patients, encouraging them to talk in a safe environment about their issues. The counselor will help alleviate unhealthy thinking and unhealthy behaviors by offering suggestions that patients can use in day-to-day life. As this method does require open communication between patient and counselor, it is very important that the patient is comfortable, willing to talk to their counselor. Some men do have problems opening up to anyone, let alone a stranger, but counselors are often able to first help men open up in general before focusing on the specific issues that bring a patient to them.
