What Makes a Good Family Counselor?

While no counselor is going to be the perfect fit for all families, it is a good idea to start by looking at counselors who are licensed. While a license does not mean that that counselor is going to be the best fit for a family, it does mean that that counselor is fully qualified to help a family work through whatever problems have brought them there.

Family counseling is a specialty in the world of therapy, as it covers issues ranging from domestic violence to infertility. It is often helpful to research possible counselors’ sub-specialties in order to make a proper selection. Family Counseling – continued…

As counselors use a number of different methods when it comes to working with their patients, it is important to find a counselor that you feel comfortable with. No one method is inherently better than another when it comes to healing a family, but one that works perfectly for one situation may not work in another. If you are unsure about what methods you might be comfortable with, reviews written by other patients might help you decide.

What is Family Counseling?

Family Counseling is a specialty in the field of psychology where counselors help patients with problems that are happening between the members of a household rather than problems mainly affecting one person. These problems may include:

  • Adolescent Behavioral Problems
  • Co-Dependency Issues
  • Communication Issues
  • Domestic Violence
  • Grief Counseling
  • Infertility
  • Infidelity
  • Marital Difficulties

As these problems are far ranging, counselors often develop sub-specialties, giving the families they counsel a chance to work with someone who is well versed in one or two issues rather than covering the entire spectrum.

Family counseling tends to take place with multiple members of the family seeing the counselor at once. This allows the counselor to see how family members interact with one another and act as a mediator, allowing family members to talk to one enough without being talked over or shut out.
