What Makes a Good Career Coach?

As a career coach will most likely have a big impact on your life, it is important that the coach is chosen carefully. The best career coach for you is generally a top coach who is a member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC). Both are coaches’ organizations, and membership signifies general adherence to standards of professionalism. A variety of credible reviews or references and visibility in the industry can also be good indicators of a career coaches’ expertise. More practical considerations to keep in mind when searching for a career coach include fees, refund policies and meeting places and times. For example, if you have a busy schedule and a coach only takes clients in a far-off office, you may want to consider a career coach who is more flexible.

What is Career Coaching?

Career coaching is similar to conventional counseling, but for career-centered problems. Often, career coaches are hired to work with people who have no idea which career they want to pursue. The coach will usually have the client take a personality and/or a cognitive ability test, and will use the results of the test to help the client find careers that are right for him or her. Also, clients sometimes enlist the help of a career coach because they are unhappy with their current occupation and wish to switch careers. It is the career coach’s responsibility to aid the client in deciding which career to pursue, to plan the career switch and to guide the client through the switch. In addition, a career coach may be hired by a client who simply seeks to improve their performance at work or to attain another, more specific goal.

Trust between the client and coach is crucial to the success of the client, who must be ready to truthfully admit to both weaknesses and strengths. If a plan for the furthering of the clients’ career is created, it is of the utmost importance that the client is honest about any digressions he or she may have made, and the coach should be capable of dealing with the consequences of such digressions. Ultimately, a career coach should aid you in finding or furthering you career, but cooperation on both the clients’ and the coach’s part is necessary for this to happen.
