What is ADHD Coaching? An Introduction:

ADHD coaching is swiftly gaining worldwide acceptance as a significant part of a treatment program for individuals diagnosed with ADHD. It is based on the idea that the brain is a flexible organ capable of change and adaptation; thus, new habits can be developed. ADHD coaching is meant to educate the client about his or her own brain. An understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses can allow an individual to work out specific and realistic strategies to maximize their own potential. As an ADHD coach is meant to help the client with coping strategies, as opposed to psychological issues, the coach will never ask “why” questions. Rather, they will ask “what,” “how,” and “when.” Answering these will aid the client in becoming more efficient and fulfilled in his or her professional and personal life.

An ADHD coach is responsible for providing the client with encouragement, feedback, recommendations, specific techniques and calendar monitoring to ensure that the client attains their goals. Weekly check-ins and regular conferences are a key aspect of the coaching process, and an initial meeting lasting anywhere from an hour to several hours is essential to developing a “game-plan” tailored specifically to the needs of the client. Meetings can take place in person, over the phone, or via email or Skype, and most coaches will accommodate the client’s preferences.

ADHD coaching is not a substitute for other forms of therapy or medicine, and this should be taken into consideration when working with an ADHD coach. In addition, time frames vary between clients, and coaches can be hired for both short-term undertakings and long-term projects.
