Multitoe interaction: bringing multi-touch to interactive floors - We propose direct touch surfaces that are orders of magnitude larger than tabletops by integrating high-resolution multi-touch sensing into back-projected floors. The key factor of the shown design is that it is based on frustrated total internal reflection sensing. FTIR allows it to identify and track users based on their sole patterns. The floor recognizes foot postures, distinguishes users who interact from people walking by, and enables high-precision interaction. In addition, the floor can approximate users' head positions based on the pressure profile in the soles and it extracts enough details from soles to allow users to play first person shooters by balancing their feet. More info at www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de The shown work is a research project by Caroline Fetzer, Thomas Augsten, Konstantin Kaefer, Dorian Kanitz, Rene Meusel, and Thomas Stoff with the support of Christian Holz and Torsten Becker at the Human Computer Interaction Lab of Prof. Patrick Baudisch at Hasso Plattner Institute, Germany. Volume Interactions DextroScope Promo Video - A 1999 video promoting the Volume Interactions DextroScope 3D surgical visualization tool. The company was founded by a friend of mine, Luis Serra. I did the voice-over for it, and another friend, Pete Kellock, wrote and performed the music. Volume Interactions was a spinoff from KRDL (Kent Ridge Digital Labs), a Singapore government computer research center where Luis, Pete, and I worked. KRDL was previously known as ISS (Institute for Systems Science), and is now I2R (Institute for Infocomm Research). In 2002, Volume Interactions was acquired by Bracco Group (www.bracco.com).

Barbara Driscoll, PhD Lab at the Saban Research Institute - Barbara Driscoll's lab in the Saban Research Institute at Children's Hospital Los Angeles investigates the impact of aging and, in the case of younger individuals, premature aging, on lung health and function. We are particularly interested in how aging affects the ability of lung progenitor cells to resist disease and function in injury repair. We are also interested in determining how these cells interact with other types of cells, including stem cells, that exist within the lung or come into the lung from the circulatory system, and how this interaction can stimulate or impede the aging process and the repair of lung injury.
