Counseling of South Tampa Provides Support for Fathers and Stepfathers - The month of June presents two potentially sticky scenarios for stepfamilies. First, June typically marks the ending of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. Sometimes this also means changes in parental visitation schedules... with some stepparents encountering their stepchildren visiting now for weeks at a time. This can present a significant change in a couple's life and while this is a difficult situation, bumps along the way may be lessened if the couple harnesses their couple strength. By this I am referring to the couple coming together before stepchildren visit and establishing mutually agreed upon rules for the household and also discussing how discipline will be handled between the partners when conflict does occur. It is important to recognize that the biological parent may want to steer away from disciplining his or her children as time spent with them throughout the year may be limited to just the summer months. Obviously, a parent with limited visitation wants this time to be positive. Here, it is important to remember that 'Parenting', including appropriate discipline when necessary, IS POSITIVE and teaches children valuable life lessons. The second potential challenge this month is Father's Day. As discussed last month for Mother's Day, the two primary keys to avoiding undue hurt and misunderstandings are Planning and the all important element of Communication.
