Just wanted to add to what gracenotes suggested. I recently reported someone and want to pass on what I learned.

Filing a complaint needs to take place in the state where the person practices. Who you report it to will depend on who issued the license – some counselors are actually nurses and the board of nursing handles that. I believe most states if not all have Web sites where you can get information and even download forms.

I also spoke to the board first and told them the behavior I considered unethical to confirm I was doing the right thing. They were able to confirm that they felt what I told them was grounds to file.

Also there is the option to file anonymously if you're worried the therapist might try to get back at you. In my case I ultimately did to protect my own family because I know without a doubt this person would retaliate.

Unfortunately that also means there's a lesser chance anything will happen as then it's harder for them to get evidence that will hold enough water to take it to the attorney general. However, they hold onto all complaints for a period of time (the board I talked to said 2-3 years) in the event someone else comes forward. So if, say, a former client speaks up, my complaint could be pulled up as further evidence, even if it is anonymous.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass that on. Hope this helps.

WD and Devon,

I liked what Devon said- "I think that the only use for recalling a memory is to gain a foothold on the things that keep occurring to you today because of those memories."

I almost forgot this!!

We sent our daughter to Mercy Ministries in Lincoln CA last year for treatment of her eating disorder. We have lost our daughter because of the therapists at Mercy Ministries…she has cut off all contact with her family because her therapist practiced “recovered memory therapy” and because of this she believes that she had been sexually abused by me, her father, even though there was no memory of anything like this before she underwent therapy (she initially had "recalled memories" of abuse by some kids at school with her first therapist, and then after she changed therapists then "recovered memories" about me.  I wish we had never allowed her to go there, we sent her there in hopes that she could recover from her eating disorder…instead we have lost our daughter.  There has been no legal action, the only thing criminal is what these people have done to my daughter and to my family.  The only thing she is a victim of is bad therapy, and I'm sure she's not the only one.
